How to Win at Klondike Solitaire: Top 7 Strategies

Every strategic decision should be weighted toward uncovering face-down cards. Each hidden card is a constraint on your options. Uncovering it expands the game. When evaluating any move, ask: does this flip a face-down card? If yes, it's almost always the better move — even ahead of playing to the foundation.

Moving a card to the foundation feels like progress, but it removes that card from the tableau permanently. A 5 sitting on the foundation can't be used to receive a red 4 later. In the early game, keep low cards (Aces through 4s) on the foundation once placed — they rarely need to come back. But mid-range cards (5s through 9s) sometimes need to stay in play to keep sequences alive.

An empty column is the most powerful resource in Klondike. It lets you temporarily park a card, break apart a sequence you can't otherwise split, or place a King and build a whole new sequence. Never fill an empty column without a concrete plan — 'I'll put a King here just in case' is usually wrong.

Tableau sequences alternate colors. If all your red 7s are buried and you have several black 6s to place, you have a bottleneck. Notice when both cards of a given rank-color combination are blocked — it may mean a different tableau branch needs clearing first.

When two tableau moves are equally valid, choose the one that sits atop a longer column of face-down cards. Clearing that column faster gives you more options sooner.

Don't click through the stock mindlessly. After each pass, identify the cards in the stock that are blocking progress. Sometimes it's better to make a suboptimal tableau move specifically to change the order of playable moves in the next stock cycle.

Some deals are unwinnable even with perfect play. If you've cycled the stock three or more times, played every available move, and made no progress, consider restarting. Recognizing a dead position early — rather than grinding through 10 more unproductive stock cycles — makes you a better player.
